Pictures that Almost Weren't: Mad River Kayaking Trip

mad_river_kayaking_trip_201617.JPG

The Mad River was a learning experience until I went in the river going down a tiny waterfall. Then, it sucked because I thought I lost my $250 waterproof camera. Fortunately, my brother in law found it in the front of my kayak when they recovered it. After that, it was a relaxing ride down a swift current.

Dust Wind Dude at the Park Royal Cancun

park_royal_cancun_113.JPG

The hotel Heather and I stayed at in Mexico. Their violinist and up-scale restaurant were awesome (he even played Dust in the Wind). The beach was fantastic, and the water was beautifully colored as well. The food was pretty good for buffet, too. The only drawbacks were people could bring kids and everyone saw Americans as dollar signs. That gets old quick.

Sandals Grande Riviera - It's Not Woodland Beach Delaware!

a_week_in_Jamaica_2012_2013_207.jpg

All inclusive luxury Caribbean Style! Oh, to be back on Island Time, mon! Our resort was in Ocho Rios, which is where Mick Jagger has a house. It's about an hour and a half east of Montego Bay on the coast, and may I say, it was a great way to waste our time doing pretty much nothing of consequence other than pool, beach, eat, drink, be entertained, and meander around the flowers (save a side trip to Dunn River Falls). How else could we possibly unwind out of 2012 and move into the new year of 2013?!!

Ice Box Canyon Rescue: A Level of Toughness Aron Ralston Could Appreciate

ice_box_canyon_rescue-069.jpg

What started as a part day trip to Red Rock Canyon Nevada ended up being a full day excursion to get out of Icebox Canyon after Heather wrecked her knee on a descent in the slot canyon. Fortunately, our first help was search and rescue trainer Don Lester and his wife Theresa who just happens to be an RN. There were others too - Las Vegas Metro Police.... Clark County Fire Dept.... an Army guy and his friend.... the girl who offered her shirt to be used as ties for the splint. We owe you many thanks, but it's also important to say how tough Heather was to get out to the stretcher.... 2 miles and 5.5 hours later while descending and ascending bouldered paths in 80° weather.

franklin_institute_star_wars_2.jpg

As anyone with taste in movies knows, Revenge of the Sith is the best movie ever, and while the latter trilogy is often disregarded by purists (for Jar Jar, the Gungans, and the kiddie faux Nascar feel of the pod races), I actually find the latter movies better than the original 3 better than Empire and Return. The original Star Wars is still 2nd on the list. Anyway, this is the complete collection of photos from the traveling technology exhibit.

Spruce Knob: A Steep Walk into the Clouds

spruce_knob_pennsylvania_43.jpg

Scott Brown http://www.stackpolebooks.com/contributorinfo.cfm?ContribID=13 (he of the guidebooks) says this is the best view in all of PA. It's either this or the Throne Room for me. There's a lot to fall in love with up here. The steep hike is challenging and it literally feels like it goes off the map at points. In the end, the view with all of the surrounding valleys is all intensive. The question is what do you want in your view? There's a lot of farms and roads and businesses in this view. In the main view of the Throne Room, it's more mountains. Really, it's a toss up.

Thee Overnight Trip on the Standing Stone Trail: Through Midlife's Butt Kicking

standing_stone_trail_overnight_hike_71.jpg

What was meant to be 72 miles and 6 days ended up just under 20 and 2 days. From the blisters on my feet to drinking too much water and not being able to eat, I got whooped by day 2. The phone call went out at 2 and I got to Meadow Gap to be rescued by my trail angel at 730. That said, from April's hiking beginnings at Angel Falls to less than 4 months later, I was able to haul a huge 50+ pound pack over rocks and up hills with more "skill" than I ever had before. While I failed to make it, I still won by giving it my all and creating a benchmark to beat.

Just off of the Appalachian Trail exists the wall of stone that is Bear Rocks. IF YOU KEEP GOING BEYOND THIS, you will eventually come to the even steeper Knife's Edge, which affords viewers a chance to see the front side of the mountain valley. A quarter of a mile in the other direction is Bake Oven Knob, which is also featured here, where a person can see the front side of the valley as well. Bear Rocks is all about the back valley.

sullivan_falls_fall_1.jpg

Sullivan Falls, Pigeon Falls, Bear Run Falls, and a lot of nameless little falls on Sullivan Run, which is a beautiful but scrambling around the sides trail right next to Ricketts Glen. It is beautiful, but be prepared to go belly button deep or through the brush to move through the creek above Sullivan Falls. This was described as Ricketts Glen before the trails went in, which is sort of true, but it's hard to be that awesome. Still, worth a trip if you go to Sullivan / Luzerne County for the weekend.

Spring is great for Ricketts because the greens are so electric. Summer can be really hot and often, there isn't much water coming down through. Rainy mornings are the best. If only I could win Powerball and end up living near there permanently, I would be a very happy person.

Heather's first trip to Ricketts Glen

dan_and_heather_at_ricketts_3.jpg

May 17, 2008, I took Heather to Ricketts for the first time. The water was flowing more than I had ever seen it flow before. These are the cream of the crop pictures from spring and summer. I hope you enjoy the pictures of that trip as much as we did.

Iced Over: Glen Onoko in Winter

jim_thorpe_winter_2014_15.jpg

These are the pictures from 2 trips to Glen Onoko in Winter. FIrst is Glen Onoko with Will, Heidi, Zach, and Liam. Liam did well, getting up to the first falls before I stopped him due to steep icy conditions. I went to the 2nd falls for additional pictures. Second is Glen Onoko with Heather and Neil.

The steep and treacherous Glen Onoko Falls - A new standard of toughness

lehigh_gorge_12.jpg

The final waterfall is the tough one - even if the ones before it are accessed with root grabs to ascend the 60degree incline (and greater) that much of the climb is. Definitely one of the more picturesque trails of PA. You will literally go off the map to get to the final falls - but trust me, they're worth it!

Ithaca is Gorges or Fences - It's All Relative

buttermilk_falls_29.jpg

The waterfalls of the Ithaca area - as many of the 100 in 10 miles that we could possibly get to! Just don't try to kill yourself - they have nets on the bridges to stop you (and ruin the natural view for the rest of us who have no interest in trying to use nature to shuffle ourselves off this mortal coil).

The Best Waterfall in New York State - Taughannock State Park

taughannock_falls_in_winter_2015_-040.jpg

And yes, I am familiar with Niagara Falls (but I have no interest to go back to that national disgrace). However, this Cayuga Lake feeding waterfall in the Finger Lakes is not only the best waterfall in the Ithaca area, but it's the best waterfall that I've seen in the entire state.

Ludlowville Falls - Beautiful in all seasons, but spectacular in winter

ludlowville_falls_winter_2015-012.jpg

About 20 minutes or so out of town and up the lake, but well worth the trip... especially in winter. Bring your microspikes and your bravery after a cold spell. You'll be glad you did.

The Erosive Beauty of Watkins Glen

watkins_glen_2008_43.jpg

Not the racetrack since road racing is only fun if you're Boris Said, Ron Fellows, and Robbie Gordon, but alas... Watkins Glen is a sweet chasm of geological and erosive wonder underneath the Finger Lakes of central New York. That said, it takes forever to get up there.

Lake Seneca Minus the Wineries

lake_seneca_7.jpg

Situated in central New York, this finger lake which provides the water for Watkins Glen and a ton of boaters and birds is quite scenic - even if you're not a wino looking to visit the wineries.
