We're all Aboard for Ghosts and Insanity at the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

trans_allegheny_lunatic_asylum_2.jpg

The site of some serious haunting that was documented by the TAPS guys (soon to be by the Ghost Adventurer wimps), the trans allegheny lunatic asylum ia a really cool spot for psychologists too as it once housed the "not right" (whether they were truly not right or just dumped off by family).

Ausable Chasm

ausable_chasm_17.jpg

Pictures from 2009 and the late 1930's make up this album of very north New York's state deep walled canyon and river that provide for pictures and outdoor recreation. All in all, it's another opportunity to follow in the steps of my grandparents.

Do You Know the Secret of Secret Caverns

secret_caverns_7.jpg

The best part of our trip to New York for the Adirondacks was Secret Caverns where the secret is that there is a 100foot undeground waterfall. Rock and roll in 70's psychedelic fashion is king and life is good as you wander through the undground caverns. Oh, hell yeah!!

Amusement Park of the Adirondacks - Natural Stone Bridges

natural_stone_bridges_33.jpg

I'm sure it means well, but there are 1) too many people, 2) too much touristy hype, 3) too little focus on an outdoor experience, and 4) too much cost to get in the door. The only good part is Noisy Cave and you can see my pictures and video of that, so why bother going?!!

Heather's first trip to Ricketts Glen

dan_and_heather_at_ricketts_3.jpg

May 17, 2008, I took Heather to Ricketts for the first time. The water was flowing more than I had ever seen it flow before. These are the cream of the crop pictures from spring and summer. I hope you enjoy the pictures of that trip as much as we did.

Basking in the glory of Ricketts Glen in Spring and Summer

ricketts_glen_spring_2009_124.jpg

Spring is great for Ricketts because the greens are so electric. Summer can be really hot and often, there isn't much water coming down through. Rainy mornings are the best. If only I could win Powerball and end up living near there permanently, I would be a very happy person.

Ricketts Glen Fall

sullivan_run_2009_21.jpg

Fall is also a great time to be amongst the waterfalls though there isn't much foliage colors to be seen except when you're entering into the woodlands. That said, there are still a healthy mix of colors here and ther that definitely make it worth your while.

The Incerdible Grandeur of Sullivan Run

sullivan_falls_fall_1.jpg

Sullivan Falls, Pigeon Falls, Bear Run Falls, and a lot of nameless little falls on Sullivan Run, which is a beautiful but scrambling around the sides trail right next to Ricketts Glen. It is beautiful, but be prepared to go belly button deep or through the brush to move through the creek above Sullivan Falls. This was described as Ricketts Glen before the trails went in, which is sort of true, but it's hard to be that awesome. Still, worth a trip if you go to Sullivan / Luzerne County for the weekend.

A Muddy Journey off the Beaten Path to Heberly Run

heberly_run_2009_4.jpg

The rougher side of Sullivan Run (at least for cars) was a journey through mud and bogs on an ealry fall day in 2009. More photos will follow when the weather improves and we can feel warm while treking through the water to get to Big Falls and Lewis Falls. Until then, here is Upper and Lower Twin Falls.

Pennsylvania's Biggest Waterfall - Raymondskill

lower_raymondskill_falls_13.jpg

And so it was that in June of 2009 we finally tagged the bottom of Raymondskill (3rd visit). Almost 200 feet tall (ff you count both falls as 1), it's definitely a must see - but mostly for what's at the bottom.

Northern PA's Other Mega Waterfall - Bushkill Falls

bushkill_2009_52.jpg

Yes, it's bigger than anything at Ricketts, but you also have to pay additional funds to get in AND they have this thing about not letting people in to hike during the winter. Personally, in the words of my personal hero Bill O' Reilly, we think that is ridiculous.

The new standard of toughness - The steep and treacherous Glen Onoko Falls

lehigh_gorge_12.jpg

The final waterfall is the tough one - even if the ones before it are accessed with root grabs to ascend the 60degree incline (and greater) that much of the climb is. Definitely one of the more picturesque trails of PA. You will literally go off the map to get to the final falls - but trust me, they're worth it!

St Peters quiet days on the rocks - unless the sun brings out the nitwits

st_peters_7.jpg

I was once told that Mike Piazza's family purchased some of the former art town, but in all honestly, it doesn't matter because the creek is still a sweet little hike down with lots of boulders to play on. The only drawback is the graffiti and stoners that wander around the back woods, but all the same, they're too intoxicated to really be a problem that needs anything other than stepping over.

The Erosive Beauty of Watkins Glen

watkins_glen_2008_43.jpg

Not the racetrack since road racing is only fun if you're Boris Said, Ron Fellows, and Robbie Gordon, but alas... Watkins Glen is a sweet chasm of geological and erosive wonder underneath the Finger Lakes of central New York. That said, it takes forever to get up there.

Journeys to Bear Rocks, Knife's Edge, and Bake Oven Knob

bear_rocks_spring_2009_37.jpg

Just off of the Appalachian Trail exists the wall of stone that is Bear Rocks. Dropping 80 feet on the other side, there are plenty of great adventures to be had if only a person walks in the mile or so to it. IF YOU KEEP GOING BEYOND THIS, you will eventually come to the even steeper Knife's Edge, which affords viewers a chance to see the front side of the mountain valley. A quarter of a mile in the other direction is Bake Oven Knob, which is also featured here, where a person can see the front side of the valley as well. Bear Rocks is all about the back valley.

Autumn Days at World's End State Park

worlds_end_1.jpg

Just to the north of Ricketts is Worlds End, a giant mountain that features superb views of the Loyalsock Creek. The path along the way up is very steep and vanishes so that's another issue, but my greatest argument against the park is closing for winter hikers. Personally, we stand by the right and privilege of any free American to take risks (for Abbey's sake), but alas... in this lawsuit happy world of scumbags like Jon Edwards...

Hickory Run - Hawk Falls (autumn leaves + winter ice)

So we went Fourth of July Camping at Little Buffalo State Park

little_buffalo_state_park_28.jpg

The map says it's just outside of Harrisburg, but actually, it's a little more north. The Juniata River (pronounced JOO NEE AT UH - not JUAN EE AT UH - important note for people from Ohio) runs behind the campground we stayed at and Little Buffalo Creek is a nice manmade lake with a great walk around it.

Mount Hope Winery - Renaissance Faire and Poe Evermore

pa_renaissance_faire_13.jpg

We finally made it up to see Mount Hope's finest rendition of a Shakespearean English town, and it was well worth it. Check out my videos as well - though I must say that you're probably not priviliged enough to see the grape stomping!! Also, the renditions of Poe's works (for better or worse - strange no matter what) are also here.

Blue Marsh and the Tulpehocken Creek

heather~0.jpg

The greatest place to hike in Berks County. So many people decree it for its falseness (the dam on the Tulpohocken Creek created it), but frankly, the views of all that surrounds it in this suburban county of ours make it a great day out.
And I love it. Need I say more.

Baltimore: Home of ESPN Zone's fabulous fries

heather_and_i_in_baltimore.jpg

While my sister will laugh at my love of ESPN Zone's fries, Baltimore shows that you can turn the ghetto into a moneymaker if you move out riff raff (the red light section) and you move in the stores, the aquarium, and the touristy stuff. Of course, you'll need police to keep the red light in its section (even if the crackheads wander out to beg for handouts, occasionally, you needn't worry since the drugs and the beatings they give each other makes them slow and incoherent).

As anyone with taste in movies knows, Revenge of the Sith is the best movie ever, and while the latter trilogy is often disregarded by purists (for Jar Jar, the Gungans, and the kiddie faux Nascar feel of the pod races), I actually find the latter movies better than the original 3 better than Empire and Return. The original Star Wars is still 2nd on the list. Anyway, this is the complete collection of photos from the traveling technology exhibit.
